Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a branch of Dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dentofacial irregularities or poor occlusion (poor bite).

It seeks the perfect positioning of the teeth with the concomitant aesthetic and health benefits, as well as the normal coordination of the maxillas, thereby achieving facial harmony.

What are the most common cases requiring Orthodontics?..

  1. 1. Over-crowded or super-imposed teeth.
  2. Overbites (top teeth excessively covering the lower teeth).
  3. Open bites (the posterior teeth close but not the anterior ones).
  4. A lot or a little space between teeth.
  5. Too many or missing teeth.

Are orthodontic treatments painful?

The forces applied to move the teeth are gentle, and therefore after the first few days you will not feel anything in particular.

Will I be able to lead a normal life?

Yes, totally. Orthodontic braces will not interfere with your normal activities. Some recommendations should be followed when it comes to eating or brushing one’s teeth. They will not change how you speak; you can maintain your professional activity and your social relationships with complete normality.

Are the results of the treatment stable?

All treatments require appropriate maintenance. With the help of fixed or removable retainers the results obtained can be stable, thereby being a lifelong investment.

On whom can the treatment be applied? Is it possible in adults?

It can be undertaken at any age.  In children and adolescents, being in the midst of bone growth, it can act on both a dental and skeletal level.  Once growth has stopped it will act only on the teeth.

At what age can treatment begin?

It is difficult to establish at what age a child requires orthodontic treatment. If we bear in mind that between the ages of 7 and 12 children are in a teeth-changing period, a clinical and radiological evaluation at around 7 years of age is advisable, together with monitoring dentofacial growth.

Where there are evident problems it is advisable to check them prior to this age for the purposes of undertaking a 1st phase of the treatment, thereby often achieving results which are unachievable by Orthodontics alone once the skeletal growth period has finished. In adults, treatment can begin at any age.

What are the consequences of not receiving treatment?

Evaluating exactly what problems may be experienced in the future is difficult, but normally any disorders will become aggravated over time, particularly in a child or adolescent in the midst of growth.

Treatment is advisable for two fundamental aspects:

  1. If the anomaly is detected and treated in time, its treatment will be much easier, reducing discomfort, time and cost.
  1. 2. We might avoid a more complex treatment (maxillofacial), avoiding potential anomalies in the bone which would be reflected in the appearance of the face.
